Esbjerg — Denmark's fifth-biggest city
Before the decision was made in 1868 to build a port on the west
coast of Denmark, only about 50 people lived in Esbjerg. In less
than 150 years, it has now grown into the fifth largest conurbation
in the country, with everything a modern city has to offer. Visit,
the fascinating waterfront area, the long pedestrian streets, the
many shows in Music House and Tobakken, the seals in the Fisheries
and Maritime Museum or the monument "Man at Sea" on Sædding
beach.
Esbjerg's name stems from the words "bjerg" (mountain) and "ese"
(a Jutland word for baiting hooks). The mountain in question was a
40-metre high dune on which women used to sit and bait hooks. The
"mountain" was later removed to make way for the harbour. Hence the
name Esbjerg.
